Wear and Failure Analysis
When equipment failures occur, an accurate assessment of the underlying cause is absolutely necessary for preventing their reoccurrence. An investigation, using Chevron's Wear & Failure Analysis program, helps determine the optimum course of action, including changes in lubricant product and/or application.

The information gained from this investigation also provides critical insights into your lubrication and maintenance procedures and helps prevent costly failures and unscheduled downtime in the future.

Wear & Failure Analysis benefits:
  • Root cause of equipment failure
  • Recommendations on preventing future failures
  • Expert consultation on health of your equipment
    Oil and parts analysis
  • Equipment assessment and consulting during inspection and tear downs
The steps in completing a Wear and Failure Analysis are:
  • Root Cause Failure Investigation - Accurate failure analyses involves the analytical tools of a state-of-the-art microscopy and metallurgy lab, together with the keen insights of a highly experienced investigator.
  • Material Evaluation - Chevron's Tribology lab has all the essential tools to carry out detailed materials evaluations including fracture analysis, part conformity/form and surface profilometry, hardness, case-depth characterization, and microstructural analysis.
  • Lubricant Chemical/Physical Analysis - All of our wear and failure investigations are enhanced by information about the lubricant's physical and chemical properties.

Performance Evaluation Analysis
Performance Evaluation Analysis includes a variety of highly specialized tests designed to evaluate lubricant and equipment performance and, ultimately, how you can achieve optimum performance from your equipment and lubricants. You'll also gain insight into whether or not to change your lubricant, and discover the performance differences between Chevron and Texaco brand lubricants and other brands you might be considering. In addition, these tests can identify existing or potential equipment wear and lubricant contamination before they cause damage and unscheduled downtime. Our goal is to give you all the information necessary to:
  • Keep equipment properly maintained and operating at peak efficiency
  • Help you switch products in the most cost-effective hassle-free way
  • Ensure maximum results from your total lubrication program

Performance Evaluation Analysis may consists of any or all of the following test, depending on your requirements:

  • Compatibility Tests - We offer a wide range of application-specific tests so you can have complete confidence in the results no matter how specialized your equipment or application may be. Critically important compatibility tests are conducted before the old and new lubricants are mixed, thus preventing potentially costly damages to your equipment from unexpected reactions.
  • Oxidation/Corrosion Resistance Tests – We conduct industry and proprietary tests that let you make direct performance comparisons between Chevron lubricants and other products on this important characteristic.
  • Viscosity Tests - Viscosity is the single most important property of any lubricant. Our full range of viscosity tests measures pumpability at low temperatures, shear stability at both high and low temperatures, and film and traction characteristics under high pressure. We also offer proprietary grease tests that evaluate performance over a wide range of temperatures.
  • Additional Performance Tests - A number of other tests are available for measuring important lubricant properties like foam stability, filterability, dispersability, volatility, and water separability. These tests provide invaluable data that will help you compare different lubricants in some of your facility's most specific and unique applications.
